What are the four learning styles?

The article explores Neil Fleming’s VARK model which is widely recognised in psychology and education. It states that there are four main learning styles; visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Learning styles aim to identify how people learn best. Lets take a closer look at the different learning styles.

Visual
Visual learners prefer to be shown information. Being able to visualise concepts helps them to understand, process and learn the information being presented to them. Using pictures, charts, graphs, infographics and illustrations, for example, is a great way to help visual learners understand what they are being taught.

Auditory
Others may associate with an auditory style of learning. This is where listening to the information is the most effective style of learning for them. Listening to lectures, podcasts and audio books are a great way for auditory learners to understand information.

Reading/ writing
Some learners will find reading written words the most effective way of learning. Handouts, textbooks, and written notes will help them to learn the information efficiently.

Kinesthetic
Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn with practical tasks. Carrying out a an activity related to what they are learning helps them to remember and process the information.

What are the benefits of knowing your learning style?
When you understand how you learn best, you can then seek out these very methods to assist in your learning. For example, if you are a kinesthetic learner, a hands-on course can really help you get to grips with what you need to learn. Knowing your learning style and seeking ways to support yourself will help you to retain information more effectively, learn faster and stay motivated. Knowing your learning style will also help you to chose work environments that are most suited to you as well as assist you learning and developing the skills needed to advance in your career.
