Wellness tips for busy mums

Let's face it, looking after small children isn't always the easiest of tasks. It can be hard to prioritise self care make time for yourself, treat yourself or to prioritise your own needs when you're caught up the wonderful yet exhausting world of motherhood, yet looking after yourself is vital for your well-being. With just a few tweaks to your usual routine you can ensure you give yourself that much needed bit of TLC. You certainly deserve it! Here are a few ways I try to incorporate a bit of self-care into my day to day life...

Daily yoga
Although I have recently switched my daily yoga sessions to weekly pregnancy yoga classes (and intend to recommence the daily sessions once settled with the new baby) it still has an amazing effect on my health and well-being. When I was new to yoga, I started off going to weekly classes but after a while, opted to do yoga in the comfort of my own home after I discovered the amazing Yoga With Adrienne classes on YouTube. I try to do a little each day; the videos can be as short as 15 minutes which is perfect if you're short on time but at the same time, if I don't manage a day, I don't put pressure on myself either. Yoga takes me to a place of calmness that I don't find anywhere else. I always liken it to taking a dip in a cool pool; I feel so refreshed after. Just practicing simple breathing exercises can reset your mind and help you to feel calmer and more relaxed.

A relaxing bath and pamper session
This is a wonderful way to ensure you take a bit of time for yourself. Treat yourself to a luxurious bubble bath, lie back and unwind. A warm bath always makes me feel more relaxed after a stressful day. You can kit out your bathroom to be a mini haven with beautiful scents, ornaments, and your favourite bath products. After your relaxing bath, you can really pamper yourself with by using for example, luxury moisturisers, leave-in hair conditioner, nail and cuticle cream, lash serum and lip balm. I have recently discovered Borboleta Lash Serum which makes your lashes look fuller and thicker in as little as four weeks; healthy, beautiful lashes are the dream! You may wish to consider the addition of bathroom accessories such as shelves for your candles or soap dispensers for shower gels and hand creams for example. If you want the ultimate pamper session, book a mobile massage in the comfort of your own home.

Drink plenty
It's no secret that water has amazing health benefits to our bodies but it also is amazing for our mental well-being too. Replacing even one of your caffeinated drinks with a cool refreshing glass of water will benefit you but if you can manage to drink water more regularly throughout the day you'll soon notice the effects! It can be hard to remember to keep hydrated when you're busy so keep a flask filled or even a few in different rooms of the house. Matcha is also a great option when it comes to boosting your energy levels. It contains powerful antioxidants and 8 B vitamins to keep you feeling your best.

Health MOT
There are lots of reasons why having a health assessment is a good idea. They can spot early signs of illness or provide reassurance. They can also highlight ways where you can improve your overall health and wellbeing. It is also worth paying care and attention to areas of your body that need that little bit extra TLC- perhaps, for example, you are prone to ear infections and can make use of regular ear wax removal. Get Help and Talk to a Professional When You're Struggling
Physical health MOTs are essential, as are mental health assessments! Check-in with yourself every now and then. Are you feeling too much pressure and anxiety? Do you find it hard to wind down or to enjoy your usual hobbies and interests? So many of us mums put other people first - it only feels natural and right. But never forget you're important too, and if you are struggling with your mental wellbeing, this could impact your life and outlook in serious ways down the line. You might think you're too busy to reach out and get some professional help, but with online counselling, like the services provided by The Awareness Centre, you can get therapy when you need it, wherever you are.

Read before bed
It can be tempting to stare at a screen before you go to sleep perhaps having one last check of social media, but the light from our phones or from TV screens can disrupt our sleep patterns and make it harder to fall asleep. Reading will help you feel more relaxed and what's better than getting utterly engrossed in a good book?
