One of the main advantages of a single sex school is that the opposite sex can often be a big distraction. Children often feel that they need to show off and impress the opposite sex, so a single sex school is great for eliminating this disruption and allows students to behave in ways they might not feel comfortable with.
Stereotypically, girls tend to mature at a faster rate than boys, so in a girl’s only school there won’t be any boys to hold them back. However, many argue that the positive, maturing influence that girls have on boys in a co-educational environment is missing from an all boys’ school.
Another advantage of single sex education is that these schools often break down gender stereotypes. Boys can learn textiles and girls can play rugby without any embarrassment. Teachers are also able to tailor their lessons so that they’re specifically targeted at the gender they’re teaching. For instance, they can work on a particular novel that’s more relatable to one gender than another.
Of course, there are pros and cons to every school so it’s important to weigh up your options and figure out what is best for your child. What works for one might not work for another and many professionals argue that single sex education is not an accurate reflection of real life. However, if your daughter is easily distracted by boys or your son wants to explore hobbies outside of his gender norm, a single sex school might be the best option.
