Teaching Your Kids to Respect School Rules

Teaching respect in the classroom is a huge task for teachers; one that they have to work on every single day of the academic year. However, it’s also something that you can explore with your children outside of the classroom. Here are some tips from an independent school in Surrey.

It’s easy to forget that our children aren’t born with excellent manners and respect for the rules. They have to be taught what is right and what is wrong, which is something you can start to explore with them as soon as they’re old enough to comprehend what you’re saying.

First of all, you need to be explicit in teaching them what respect actually means, as well as what following the rules involves. Speak to them about how they should behave within a classroom environment and who is in charge when you’re not around. Always set a good example and always follow the rules. You can’t expect your child to respect school rules if you don’t respect any rules yourself.

You’ll need to establish a difference between rules and routine. Routine, such as bed time, can be adjusted as necessary and it doesn’t matter if this time is interfered with every once in a while, whereas rules, like don’t run into the road, are set in stone to ensure the safety and security of your child. Your child needs to understand this difference so that they don’t get mixed messages about what guidelines can and can’t be altered sometimes.

When your child successfully follows the rules, be sure to praise them as a form of encouragement. Likewise, when your child breaks the rules, be sure to punish them appropriately so that they know not to make the same mistake again. Make sure you explain to them the reasons why rules are in place to begin with. For more support, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s school.
